Did you know that smiling and laughter have numerous health benefits, including reducing blood pressure and pain, decreasing depression, boosting the immune system and staying young?

Even ‘fake’ smiling and laughing gives benefits. Have you ever wondered how?

Let’s find out!

Science says…

UMKC researchers tested the popular theory that smiling might cause others to perceive you as being younger than you actually are.

And YES, in a small study, college students thought older people who had happy smiles on their faces looked younger than they actually were.

So that’s a great reason to smile!

How it works

A simple smile can release endorphins that result in a feeling of wellbeing.

When the facial muscles that cause smiling contract, a signal fires back to the brain, stimulating our reward system, and further increasing our level of happy hormones, or endorphins. So when our brain feels happy, we smile; when we smile, our brain feels happier.

Researchers had proven that intentionally exercising your zygomaticus major muscle and orbicularis oculi muscle can actually give the same benefits of smiling, easily achieved by holding a pencil between your teeth.

This leads to another interesting German study about the effect of Botox injections on people’s emotional experiences.

Botox never crosses the blood-brain barrier, so its effects on emotions are solely caused by its restraints on the facial muscles.

A modern study by David T. Neal, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Southern California, and Tanya L. Chartrand, professor of marketing and psychology at Duke University, tested the abilities of Botoxed women to decipher emotions. When confronted with a set of photographs of human eyes, women with Botox were significantly less able to match the eyes to the appropriate human emotions than plain old wrinkled adults.

Facial cues, creases and expressions are a vital part of our unique human experience, and being able to smile fully and broadly definitely helps give the brain the message to release those feel good hormones we love!
