Thyroid Detoxification – What is Extracellular vs Intracellular Detoxification?

By Lucy Rose Clinic

Detox can be a complex undertaking, especially if you have any pre-existing health conditions, are on pharmaceutical medications, or have had known toxin exposure – such as hairdressing, welding, cleaner, etc.

Cellular Detoxification

Supported detoxification for thyroid patients

Our body naturally detoxes itself everyday, however, presentation of disease, lethargy, dull skin, brain fog, etc, are signs that the body is not able to eliminate toxins and biochemical waste as quickly as it is accumulating them. Our ability to detox is largely factored by our genes, but as we know through the science of epigenetics, many genes (particularly detox related genes) can be tuned up and down by manipulation of our environment – eg Food, Stress, Water, etc. Our body has 2 avenues when eliminating toxins – excrete them, or accommodate them. Thyroid patients already have impaired detoxification, and hence end up with a toxic burden as the body tries to accommodate more and more toxins, with them building up over years and decades.

Extracellular (Outside The Cell) = Drainage

Basically this is the area between cells, and is bathed in lymphatic fluid across through which all nutrition and all waste must pass for exchange between blood and cells.

Most detox approaches work on clearing the extra-cellular space by opening up the “drains” out of the body by increasing the functioning of the kidneys, liver, and GI tract, and by manually moving the lymphatic stagnation out, using movement and massage. Acupuncture, fasting diets, juicing, and saunas also work in this space.

Detox should always focus on this aspect first, as you shouldn’t attempt intracellular detox without a functional and healthy extra-cellular matrix to remove any released waste from the cell.

Intracellular (Inside The Cell)

Intracellular refers to the inside region of cells and is made up of cytoplasm, mitochondrion, DNA, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and more amazing things! (Who’s getting science class flashbacks?)

By supporting the removal of waste and toxins from inside the cell, you can improve your DNA expression and reverse many health complaints. However – it depends on the levels of damage to the tissues and cells. Many of our patients have high levels of toxic metals such as cadmium, mercury, and aluminium, and that requires intracellular detoxification to reduce the toxic burden in the body.

How long does it take?

It is said that for every year of illness, it takes 1 month of treatment to reverse.

A therapist will work with your specific needs, genetic traits and weaknesses, and support you in the best possible way to detox safely.

I heard a report of a man who did a lifestyle overhaul and detoxed for 5 years, and at the end his eyes went from brown to blue! He originally had blue eyes, with a brown heterochromia overlaying the blue giving the eye a different colour. Brown heterochromia is due to liver stagnation – and it took him 5 years to clear his liver to the point of his iris changing colour – an amazing story, that highlights how much is possible.
