Do you struggle with weight loss?
Could Leptin be the hormone putting all your good intentions to the side?
Leptin is a hormone that is very interesting, as it is not made by a gland, such as a thyroid hormone.
It is made by our fat – or adipose tissue.
The more fat the body has, the more Leptin hormone that is secreted.
It is implicated with obesity, and most people who struggle with weight have a leptin issue.
The Role of Leptin
High levels of Leptin in the blood will trigger the hypothalamus (in our brain) to lower the appetite, allowing the body to dip into the fat stores to feed itself.
Leptin has a role in managing calorie burning, inflammation, auto immunity and sugar levels.
If the body isn’t getting these signals, and there is still hunger, this is a case of ‘leptin resistance’. This is very common.
Then there is a condition on the opposite side, where someone doesn’t make enough leptin, so the body is thinking it needs more energy, creating hunger and increased appetite even when there is adequate fat storage. This is called congenital leptin deficiency, and is actually quite rare.
Leptin resistance is seen when the level of leptin in testing is high but the body is basically ignoring it, there is excess fat storage, and increased appetite is usually present.
Leptin resistance is now believed to be one of the main biological contributors to obesity.
Often this is compounded with blood sugar issues, such as high fasting glucose, as seen in the test result below.
This clinical picture makes weight loss by calorie restriction very difficult, hard to stick to, and slow. If compounded with other hormonal imbalances, it can be even more complex!

How LEPTIN affects WEIGHT GAIN?
When there is leptin resistance, the brain is not getting the signal that there is adequate fat storage, despite a high amount of leptin in the blood. When the body loses weight, the amount of leptin reduces, and the brain interprets this as a starvation risk, so your hunger increases substantially, which is why so many people fail with dieting.
Your hormones are sabotaging your weight loss.
- Weight loss with sudden fast weight gain due to increased appetite.
- Yo-yo dieting pattern.
- Results of weight loss just don’t stick.
Chronic inflammation – the fuel for the fire.
This inflammation can be caused by a variety of factors, and must be addressed to help get this viscous hormonal cycle under control:
- Food intolerances
- Toxin load such as heavy metals can cause high inflammation
- Medication and medical implants
- Iodine deficiency
- Autoimmune diseases
- Pain – any pain in the body is a sign of inflammation
Leptin is often the missing piece of the puzzle for persistent weight issues.
