Tips For Libido

December 20, 2020January 19, 2022by Lucy Rose Clinicin LibidoTags thyroid

Have you ever been told this?

  • Women over 50 shouldn’t naturally have a thriving libido
  • Women who has had a hysterectomy will never get their libido back
  • Don’t worry if you don’t want intimacy with your partner – it’s natural

It is not true – even if it is common.

There are different factors involved for women’s libido as they age due to a huge shift in hormones, but with natural medicine, you CAN get a dead libido back!

The Number 1 Thing Affecting Libido

Energy, vitality and fatigue.

Being a clinic who works with thousands of people suffering with Hypothyroidism, fatigue is something we know inside and out.

If your body is in a deep, physiological fatigue, sex, pleasure and reproduction is prioritised last. If your thyroid hormone is really low, pregnancy is often not even maintainable, so sex drive goes out the window – the body can’t deal with that right now.

This kind of deep-set, mind boggling fatigue is often caused by 3 things – hypothyroidism, nutritional deficiencies, and adrenal stress.

In hypothyroidism your body slows right down, I always relate it to a semi-hibernation – your body feels half asleep all the time. When bears hibernate they become insulin resistant and hypothyroid. A good chunk of our patients are also insulin resistant and hypothyroid, and their fatigue is no joke. Your brain is not going to be receptive to intimacy if your thyroid isn’t functioning well. It just takes too much effort and it is going to prioritise life sustaining actions over pleasure.

The Nutrient Factor to Low Libido

Iron

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide, and effects the way oxygen is carried around the body. Low iron will leave the cells in the body starved of oxygen, and fatigue will be the result, impacting libido in women and contributing to E.D. in men.

Zinc is another big one, especially for men, as is vitamin D, which causes vascular dysfunction

B-complex vitamins are essential for energy, and many people have issue with converting B vitamins from their food into the necessary active form. This can be due to MTHFR gene issues, low nutritional intake, poor absorption due to gut issues, or a toxic burden in the body.

Adrenal Hormones – Essential for Libido in Perimenopause

The third contributor to a low libido is stress and adrenal dysfunction. This can be especially apparent around perimenopause and menopause. You see, all of our steroid hormones are made out of cholesterol – that includes estrogen and testosterone, as well as cortisol – one of our stress hormones. If cortisol production is high because of stress, this steals away the building blocks for your sex hormones, which will not only impact libido, but contribute to hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms.

We test all these hormones in a saliva sample in anyone who is presenting with adrenal or hormonal dysfunction, and once we see what is going on on a cellular level, we can then treat accordingly.

“I was pleasantly surprised when my libido came back for the first time in 10 years!

No pessaries were used, just a herbal medicine and supplement addressing my nutritional deficiencies.

I never knew that stress played such a role in my response to intimacy.” T.K.

Rest and relaxation help libido greatly via the easing on the adrenal hormone system. This is why people fall pregnant on holidays!

If your fatigue doesn’t get better with rest, then addressing the true underlying imbalances is needed to get you feeling full of vitality again.
