Thyroid Profile

• TSH

• This test is the standard test run by your GP and measures the amount of thyroid stimulating hormone produced by the pituitary gland . This hormone is responsible for telling the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones (T4 and T3).

• Free T3

• This hormone is the active form of the thyroid hormone. It converts from T4 in the body. Low levels of Free T3 indicate that you are not converting enough T4 to T3 and so do not have enough thyroid hormone.

• Free T4

• The largely inactive form of thyroid hormone, it converts into T3. Low levels of free T4 indicate an underproduction of thyroid hormone and a hypothyroid state. High free T4 indicates you are potentially in a hyperthyroid state, alternating high to low thyroid state, OR that you are not converting your T4 into T3 sufficiently and your T4 is building up. (Which illustrates why a full thyroid screen is necessary!)

• Reverse T3

• Is a biproduct of the process of converting T4 to T3. It basically blocks free T3 from doing its job. This is one of the most important tests you can do for your thyroid. If you had a high rT3 but you didn’t test for it and your free T4 and free T3 were normal you could be sent away with a clean bill of health when in fact you are hypothyroid as the free T3 isn’t working.

• Thyroid Antibodies (Anti-TPO, Anti-TG, TRAbs)

• These blood markers test for the presence of thyroid antibodies. A high level shows that your immune system is attacking the thyroid gland, indicative of an autoimmune condition such as Hashimoto’s or Graves Disease.

• SHBG

• This is a protein made by your liver that binds tightly to certain sex hormones. Low SHBG levels can indicate the presence of a wide range of conditions from Insulin resistance to Hypothyroidism.

• Do I need to fast?

• You are required to fast for 10-12 hours before your blood draw. A non-fasting blood draw may affect results.

• No, no additional fees will be charged by the collection centre.

• Can I take medication?

• Medication has the potential to affect results. Please check with your practitioner before your blood draw about the potential effects your medication may have.
