Selenium: The Thyroid Nutrient Most Australians Are Missing

Selenium and Thyroid Antibodies

Selenium has also attracted attention because of its potential effect on thyroid autoimmunity.

People with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis may have elevated thyroid antibodies, including thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb). These are markers associated with an autoimmune response involving the thyroid.

Research into selenium supplementation has produced mixed findings, but the evidence is encouraging enough to warrant interest. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis involving 35 studies found that selenium supplementation was associated with a reduction in TPOAb levels. However, the researchers also noted substantial variation between studies.

In other words, selenium may help reduce certain antibody levels in some people, but it should not be presented as a cure for autoimmune thyroid disease.

Why Antioxidant Protection Matters

The thyroid naturally produces hydrogen peroxide as part of thyroid hormone production. Because oxidative processes are involved, the gland also needs antioxidant systems to help keep this activity under control.

Selenium-dependent enzymes, including glutathione peroxidases, contribute to the body’s antioxidant defence.

Think of selenium as part of the thyroid’s protective toolkit rather than a magic thyroid supplement. Adequate intake helps support normal biological processes, but it is only one piece of a much larger nutritional and hormonal picture.

For people concerned about thyroid antibodies, this distinction is particularly important. Lowering an antibody number is not necessarily the same thing as improving how you feel, and treatment decisions should consider symptoms, thyroid function and the wider clinical picture.

Are Australians Getting Enough Selenium?

Australia’s Nutrient Reference Values provide recommended intake levels, while the National Health and Medical Research Council has also been reviewing the upper level for selenium. The current Australian and New Zealand reference values include recommendations for adequate intake and preventing deficiency.

Rather than assuming you need a high-dose supplement, it is generally sensible to consider where selenium is coming from in your diet.

Good dietary sources include seafood, meat, poultry, eggs, dairy products, grains and nuts. Brazil nuts are particularly rich in selenium, but their selenium content can vary substantially, so eating large quantities in an attempt to “boost” thyroid health is not advisable.

Can You Take Too Much Selenium?

Yes.

Selenium is required in small amounts, and excessive intake can cause problems. This is one reason why taking several supplements containing selenium at the same time can be risky.

Symptoms associated with excessive selenium intake can include nausea, gastrointestinal upset, hair or nail changes and a characteristic garlic-like breath odour. Very high chronic intake can be harmful.
